Leicester ladies entertained Wiltshire Mavericks and Northampton at Sunday, October 21 - their first home game of the season.

Having lost one and won one at Cardiff last month, the ladies were determined to walk away with a double victory.

A very young Wiltshire Mavericks took on the Leicester lot first, proving to be an able side. With most of their players under 18 they were quicker and fitter than the home team but Leicester had experience on their side and took the first set 25-23 with some excellent blocking and hitting.

The second set was a close one but a few errors by the home team left them with too much to do. This one went to Wiltshire 25-22. The last two sets were close again but on giving Wiltshire an early lead Leicester neither had the time nor the fitness to claw them back, losing both 25-19. Wiltshire walked away with a 3-1 victory in a game which could and should have gone the other way.

Leicester later took on Northampton, also defeated by the Mavericks, and were slow to start, handing their opponents a 5-0 lead through their own errors. They did pull back but the away team had the upper hand, taking the set 25-20.

Leicester stormed the second set, showing what they can be capable of when they’re motivated and on top of their game, winning 25-13. But in the second two sets Leicester let Northampton’s big wing hitter get the better of them, giving them a generous lead. Northampton won 21-21 and 25-19 and the game 3-1.

This was a disappointing day for Leicester with lack of fitness – physical and mental - being blamed. This is something they must work on if they are to fare better this year.
